7 Questions to never ask a DJ

  • Do you take requests?
    • OF COURSE! If you’re hiring a DJ for a private event, that DJ better accept requests. The whole point of a party is for everyone to have a good time, and who knows what the crowd wants to hear better than the crowd? While DJ’s are not jukeboxes, your DJ should be open to hearing your suggestion.
  • You’ve never heard of Artist XYZ?
    • Sorry, no. DJ’s really do try to have a wide selection of music, but nobody is going to have every single song. These days, anyone that uses software to DJ is likely to have tens of thousands of songs in their library, and can probably find something you’d like to hear.
  • Can you play the song that goes like…?
    • Which one? To request a song, you have to know the song. Over the blaring music, and trying to keep the party going, it’s hard to hear humming. Try asking a friend to jog your memory away from the speaker. That’s going to be more fruitful than humming in the DJ’s ear.
  • Anything not related to advancing the party
    • DJs have one goal: keep everyone having a good time. Approaching the DJ to take more time than it takes to request a song, takes their focus off the party and the whole party can suffer. Requests are great, but ask about their life story after the party.
  • Can I pretend to DJ?
    • You cannot get behind the turntables and pretend to DJ. Equipment is expensive, the DJ’s reputation is on the line, and if something goes wrong, the DJ is at fault. Having inexperienced guests in the booth is entirely too risky for the benefit.
  • Can you play something danceable?
    • Everyone has different preferences on what to dance to. The DJ knows people want to dance, and a good one will play a little bit of everything to try and give everyone time to shine on the dance floor. Something you’ll like better is coming in 90 seconds.
  • What should I ask you?
    • Anything that’s on your mind. I frequently get this question when being interviewed. There’s a million questions anyone could ask, but let’s answer your questions and not mine, to make sure we answer questions you actually want to hear!
